“When it comes to playing music, I truly think of it as play.”
Growing up, I was encouraged to eat, sleep and breathe music. Having been taught the building blocks of singing, playing and performing by my father at a very early age, I took to the stage singing at coffee houses at as young as five years old. My dad, three brothers and sister and I would perform at different events around the state in those early years: sometimes just singing acapella.
I have never received formal lessons on the piano but rather, developed my skill through long hours of unstructured, rejuvenating playing. For most of my life I only took to the keys for relaxation and when songwriting then, at the behest of longtime friend Natasha Hilmoe, I started learning how to muddle my way through covers for a duo show. That nudge and encouragement has brought me to where I am at today, sharing some “playtime” with you!

“Music is the universal language to all life’s creatures.”
Formerly Natasha Sickler; I was born in Dickinson and raised in Bismarck. I have had a deep love for music and singing for as long as I can remember. I wouldn’t say I come from a family who is musically talented, but rather appreciates music. My mother was a wedding singer for Dickinson in her day, and my mom’s mom has been playing piano since she was very little, showcasing at church and teaching lessons. They both influenced me when I was a child to follow my dreams and continue to sing. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their positive acceptance and guidance.
When I was younger my performances were limited to singing in the shower and singing for my family. I can remember singing along with the jukebox to Brittney Spears on my parent’s deck in the backyard. The deck was the perfect stage, where I would walk up and down singing my heart out. I remember our neighbor would remark on my talents saying, “I should just call you Brittney.”
All through grade school, high school and into college I sang in choirs, performed in group ensembles and rocked out solo performances. It became a passion I wanted in my life forever. While I was studying musical performance through DSU, I landed the lead role in the controversial Spring Awakening musical. My first time being in a musical and I got the lead role; I was blown away! This was right about the time that I was serving at the Bistro with Romeo. We put our musical talents together and started performing duets around Bismarck. A few years later, Romeo mentioned the idea of starting a band and the rest is history. Being a part of a band has always been a goal for me. It’s a dream come true to be working with such a talented group of musicians; it’s truly meant to be.

“In my eyes, music isn’t just notes on a page, but rather a language I can communicate and express with absolute strangers!”
Born, raised and educated in Bismarck, I discovered my passion for singing at a young age. How young? I once asked my older brother when I began singing and he replied, “She started at about three and hasn’t shut up since.” While his comment is laughable, I THINK he means well, and it’s true! I grew up with deep musical roots in addition to talented musicians on both sides of my family.
My potential as a musician has taken much practice and is ever growing, but I credit my greatest mentor and influences, my late father, who had spent over a decade traveling with The Motown Temptations; as well as my mother, who had brilliant skills as a talented singer, drummer and guitarist. They both set the foundation for me as a performer and will always be my greatest inspirations. Earnestly, I consider my singing a God-given talent and know I am who I am because of Him.
I was reluctant to be a part of Sugar Break. Truthfully, my brother Romeo, nagged on me for nearly a year to join the group. I’m elated I did, as I have experienced music on a whole new level and we’re only just gettin’ started baby! I’m looking forward to writing originals with the band, studio recording and enjoying this musical journey with the crazy talented, enthusiastic and witty members of Sugar Break.
GREG FRANK
Vocals, bass, saxophone, flute
“Music is his life’s passion”
Born and raised in Bismarck, Greg first started playing the piano when he was just four years old. As he got older, he picked up playing the saxophone, flute, guitar, clarinet, bass and more. No small feat, Greg has been playing in his father’s band Fire and Shame since he was 13 years old.
Greg graduated from Century High School in 2007 where he met Romeo and Grace; they all sang together in the Century Choir. His musical involvement around Bismarck also includes: The Bismarck Mandan Civic Chorus, BSC Jazz Band, Big Al’s Big Band, West River Winds, and more.
Looking to find a group of musicians to create a new band, Greg would be guided Romeo’s way when he responded to his call for a bass player. They immediately started practicing and spending their time during the 2020 quarantine wisely by polishing their music to be ready when the lockdown was lifted.
Greg is blessed to be a part of this stunning group of musicians and would like to thank his family: Joel, Karen, Greta and Adam as well as his partner Shanna for their continued love and support.
